Property Description

A peaceful winter wonderland, without being isolated, this characterful 4 bedroom chalet on the edge of Bourg Saint Maurice benefits from being only minutes by car to town and from the Arc en Ciel Les Arcs funicular but in a really quiet undeveloped area.  The chalet backs on to a large grassy and woody paddock and has sunny views up to the Paridiski ski area - you can trace your tracks from the days skiing!  The location of the chalet means you can have the best of both worlds if you are looking for a permanent move to the Savoie – ideal for the local amenities and services all year round but so close to the skiing action if you are looking for a seasonal ski-property.  You also benefit from being based in a thriving, bustling market town which is central to other resorts such as Val d’Isere, La Rosiere or Ste Foy for example and also be in the Three Valleys within about a 30 minute car journey!

This lovely modern stone and wooden chalet offers so much to anyone looking for a family home or holiday bolt-hole for all seasons.  The peaceful, rural surroundings of the chalet give you a real feel of calm and privacy on one hand, but on the other, surprisingly, you are only minutes by car to the bustling, traditional mountain market town of Bourg Saint Maurice which offers you all the facilities you need for day-to-day life.

The chalet was recently modernised and renovated by the current owners who have done the work themselves and the style and decoration is of the highest quality and standard.  The chalet is set back off the road and is secured with gates and fencing.  The main entry on ground floor brings you to an entrance hall with a built-in shoe storage rack, a ski boot store room and a large utility room with all the plumbing set up for your laundry.  Finally there is a living room which is currently used as the owner’s office.  This room has space for a large sofa, desks and filing and there is a set of double doors which lead directly on to the terrace area of the garden.  Also off this room there is a shower room with wash basin and WC.

You can access the first floor from a set of stairs in ground floor entrance hall or the chalet has external stairs leading from the parking area which arrive on the first floor balcony, then entrance through the living room.

The first floor is home to the living area.  There is a beautiful American style open plan kitchen with all the usual equipment.  The bar looks out to the living and dining area and the whole floor is tiled throughout.  Two fantastic features on this floor – a gorgeous stone fireplace, clad in wood and the large balcony that runs around the dining and living area and faces sunny south!

At the opposite end of the living area is the first bedroom with full height windows allowing light to flood in.  There is a separate bathroom with full size bath tub and wash basin and a separate WC.

Go upstairs to the second floor which is in the eaves of the chalet and you arrive at a mezzanine style landing with laminated flooring.  This is currently a library area with a piano and desk.  It is a great asset and adds real charm to the chalet – you can just imagine sinking in to a big soft chair with a well deserved hot chocolate after a action packed day skiing in the massive Paridiski!

Off this space you find two double bedrooms and one single.  They either have full height windows or velux so, again, all bright and cheery rooms!  The communal bathroom is a contemporary design with pebble tiles, glass tiles and slate floors with a walk in shower and double hand basin, and WC.

Outside the chalet sits in a good sized plot of 514m2.  The rear garden has a large terraced area which has a stone BBQ and outdoors kitchen with sink, refrigerator and preparation area, which may be more suited to the summer, unless you invest in a couple of outside heaters and there is plenty of space for a hot-tub to help soothe the aches and pains of a heavy day off-piste skiing?!  The view draws you across the farmers grassy, snowy paddock, scattered with well established trees and the back-drop of mountains finish off the perfect picture.

The chalet has a free standing double garage, a small fire-wood store, private parking for up to 3 cars and the stone vaulted cellar from the original building is below ground.

Bourg Saint Maurice lies along the Tarentaise valley on the Isere river at around 800 metres altitude.  It is a popular mountain town where all the amenities and facilities are available for day to day life or your holidays.  The centre of town is a pretty pedestranised with an array of shops, restaurants, bars, banks and more!  There is also a retail park with supermarkets, DIY stores and sports shops.  Bourg is a really old traditional town, centrally located amongst the numerous ski resorts of the area – Val d’Isere, Tignes, La Rosiere and Ste Foy are around a 30 minute drive away – whilst the Arc en Ciel funicular will take you directly to Arcs 1600 and the Paridiski in 7 minutes.  There is a market every Saturday morning where you can find local cheeses, meats, fruit and vegetables, honeys and jams and the usual collectables.

One of the easiest ski resorts to access from the UK, Bourg Saint Maurice has its own train station with regular SNCF and TGV services linking to Chambery, Lyon and further afield.  The Eurostar runs a weekly service from England during the winter season.  Geneva, Lyon and Grenoble airports are around a 2 hour drive whilst Chambery is only 1 hour 15 minutes by car.

Bourg St Maurice

Resort Description

Bourg Saint Maurice is a bustling market town and the hub that serves most of the Tarentaise. The Eurostar finishes its journey from the UK here, and skiers head off to the local ski resorts which include Val d’Isere, Tignes, Les Arcs, La Rosiere and Sainte Foy de Tarentaise, quite a line-up of world class resorts!. None more than 30minute away. Although there is no skiing at this altitude, Bourg Saint Maurice is conveniently linked to Les Arcs 1600 by the Arc en Ciel (Rainbow) funicular railway. Les Arcs is part of the Paradiski domain, with 425km of slopes.144lifts and 239pistes which lives up to its name as a skier’s paradise. Unlike the other villages that make up les Arcs the town of Bourg Saint Maurice is open all year. The heart of Bourg Saint Maurice is its pedestrian high street. Jam packed with intriguing shops and boutiques it’s a great place to while away an afternoon, particularly suitable if you are a non skier. The town’s many bars and restaurants cater for all tastes from cosy local savoyarde to cool brasserie. Nothing can beat sipping a hot chocolaté or vin chaud in the warm, watching the snowy scene unfold outside…..heaven. Although by no means a large town Bourg Saint Maurice offers all the facilities you would expect and possibly much more. There is a cinema, which obligingly shows the occasional English language film. The indoor/outdoor swimming pool is a hit all year round, particularly in the summer when the soaring temperatures prove too much for local residents. In the winter the local marie even built an open air ice rink in the town centre, which the children loved. On a more practical note Bourg Saint Maurice has a number of large supermarkets, an all year round campsite and excellent schools for all ages. The weekly market on Saturday mornings draws in quite a crowd, the streets are closed and you can buy anything form a tea towel to a chicken! Not only does the town have a large all year round population but it also plays host to many tourists. The local mairie is very proactive, organising many events, throughout the year including hosting a stage of the Tour de France in July 2009. The summer offers lots of opportunities for lovers of the outdoors. There is a white water slalom course on the Isere river used for international canoe and kayak competitions; it’s also used by many European teams as a training course in the summer. The surrounding mountains are good for walking and mountain biking. The funicular and some of les Arcs ski lifts operate during July and August to get the walkers to the higher peaks, you can even take your mountain bile on the chairlift. Horse riding is another popular activity, as is quad biking. If that’s not enough and you have a spare moment you could always try a spot of summer glacier skiing in nearby Tignes. Phew! Bourg Saint Maurice is an action packed town.
