The property sits on the sunny side of the valley with magnificent views across the valley looking directly upon the slopes of the Paradiski! You can also see La Rosiere and the Col du Petit Saint Bernard leading over to Italy, the views of the valley are truly immense! The skiing in this area speaks for itself and the property is located just a 10 minutes drive to the Arc en Ciel funicular in Bourg Saint Maurice which gives access to the Paradiski ski domain - over 400kms of piste. You can also try the modern but less developed Espace San Bernardo which is an international ski domain of over 150kms, linking France with Italy. The Ecudets lift is just a 20 minutes drive from here so you can be sitting on the Italian side of the mountain, in the foothills of Monte Bianco eating a Pizza by lunchtime! Around the house there are plenty of opportunities to try ski touring or discover some winter wildlife on snow shoes down one of the many marked walking trails. Many ski touring enthusiasts travel a good distance to visit the gentle, wide, unmarked sunny hills of Les Chapelles, where you can skin up on your touring skis and cruise back down on fresh powder. The village of Montgirod is less than 10 minutes drive to the popular winter resort of Bourg Saint Maurice. Peaceful and private with all day sun the chalet sits on the versant du soleil – the sunny side.
But more about the property which would make an excellent family home or family base for a true mountain hideaway holiday chalet. The house reminded me of a traditional farmhouse when I first visited. With its high pitched roof, wooden cladding and the many useful outbuildings to the rear of the property. It is a great, large and lofty chalet, set in glorious woody and spacious gardens. The accommodation is laid out as follows:
Grand entrance hall which lies at the centre of the property. To the right is the equipped kitchen and dining room. You might decide to change this to make one large open plan family style kitchen? To the left is the focal point of this large house. The open plan living area is spacious, airy and bright due to its full height ceilings reaching in to the exposed beams of the pitched roof – lovely! There is an area set aside as a dining room, an office or library area and finally a bar. At the centre of these zones is a lovely open fireplace, just what you need roaring in the background after an afternoon snow shoeing in the fields above this private, quiet chalet.
Returning to the other end of the chalet, past the hallway to 4 double bedrooms. Two of the rooms are currently used as a craft room and an office. They all share a family bathroom with bath, WC, hand basin and over head shower. The main suite or parents room is a large area including a dressing room, large double bedroom and a large en-suite bathroom with bath, WC, bidet and basin. The bedroom has a door that opens out on to the terrace and garden which is a quaint feature. This house offers a further 120m2 of loft space which is used as storage at the moment. It could easily be converted to increase the living space if you desired.
Surrounded by well developed trees and gardens the house is set at the end of a private driveway. There are lots of storage sheds, potting shed and a summer garden house, vegetable plot and even a “putting green” at the back of the garden – its not St Andrews, but quite fun!

Bourg Saint Maurice is a bustling market town and the hub that serves most of the Tarentaise. The Eurostar finishes its journey from the UK here, and skiers head off to the local ski resorts which include Val d’Isere, Tignes, Les Arcs, La Rosiere and Sainte Foy de Tarentaise, quite a line-up of world class resorts!. None more than 30minute away. Although there is no skiing at this altitude, Bourg Saint Maurice is conveniently linked to Les Arcs 1600 by the Arc en Ciel (Rainbow) funicular railway. Les Arcs is part of the Paradiski domain, with 425km of slopes.144lifts and 239pistes which lives up to its name as a skier’s paradise. Unlike the other villages that make up les Arcs the town of Bourg Saint Maurice is open all year. The heart of Bourg Saint Maurice is its pedestrian high street. Jam packed with intriguing shops and boutiques it’s a great place to while away an afternoon, particularly suitable if you are a non skier. The town’s many bars and restaurants cater for all tastes from cosy local savoyarde to cool brasserie. Nothing can beat sipping a hot chocolaté or vin chaud in the warm, watching the snowy scene unfold outside…..heaven. Although by no means a large town Bourg Saint Maurice offers all the facilities you would expect and possibly much more. There is a cinema, which obligingly shows the occasional English language film. The indoor/outdoor swimming pool is a hit all year round, particularly in the summer when the soaring temperatures prove too much for local residents. In the winter the local marie even built an open air ice rink in the town centre, which the children loved. On a more practical note Bourg Saint Maurice has a number of large supermarkets, an all year round campsite and excellent schools for all ages. The weekly market on Saturday mornings draws in quite a crowd, the streets are closed and you can buy anything form a tea towel to a chicken! Not only does the town have a large all year round population but it also plays host to many tourists. The local mairie is very proactive, organising many events, throughout the year including hosting a stage of the Tour de France in July 2009. The summer offers lots of opportunities for lovers of the outdoors. There is a white water slalom course on the Isere river used for international canoe and kayak competitions; it’s also used by many European teams as a training course in the summer. The surrounding mountains are good for walking and mountain biking. The funicular and some of les Arcs ski lifts operate during July and August to get the walkers to the higher peaks, you can even take your mountain bile on the chairlift. Horse riding is another popular activity, as is quad biking. If that’s not enough and you have a spare moment you could always try a spot of summer glacier skiing in nearby Tignes. Phew! Bourg Saint Maurice is an action packed town.
