    • Property Description

On the road to Col de la Madeleine, in a remote village is a ski lift....... it’s a bit unexpected because there is very little commerce here. The valley has traditionally been home to walkers, cyclists (the tour de France comes through here) naturalists and wild animals. The inhabitants have the good fortune of living in beautiful villages, amazing scenery and relative peace and quiet. In order to boost commerce and bring another dimension to the valley, a ski lift has gone in that joins the valley into the Valmorel ski area. More of that later.

The house itself is at the end of a really pretty mountain village, with uninterrupted views towards the col. It is a maximum of 5 mins drive from the ski lift or there is racket walking and nordic skiing in the valley to enjoy. The house is on the edge of wilderness and not for those who like a lively nightlife, although there are a couple of local auberges to enjoy which provides a place to get to know the locals.

The house has a huge barn adjoining and an stunning ecurie (vaulted cave) that are ripe to renovate whilst the house is already habitable. It is spread over three floors. Enter into the kitchen / diner which is a good size and very quaint, next there is a lounge with terrace. Above are two bedrooms both of decent proportions and a shower room. Both bedrooms have balconies; the view on one side is to the col and to the other the cute village – very nice indeed.

The basement floor has a surprise, a natural spring, tap into this for your watering in the summer –be aware that the level rises and falls according to the seasons but this is considered normal in these parts and for the most part it is a trickle or dry. The basement also houses the central heating and plenty of storage is available.

Back to the ski area; The valley of "Eau Rousse", more generally known as the Vallée de Celliers, starts life at the famous col de la Madeleine (shut in the winter) and marks the Eastern boundary of the Lauzière mountain range. This is a remote valley, preserved from all development, it is the departure point for numerous ski trekking and snow shoe outings and now the valley is linked to the Valmorel ski area via the Celliers gondola. From an altitude of 1300 to 2550m: there are forests, gentle mountain pasture slopes and steep slopes on the summits.

The Grand Domaine, between the Tarentaise and Maurienne, is 3600 hectares of ski area around Valmorel, Doucy Combelouvière, Celliers and Saint François Longchamp. The 150km of pistes are made up of 50 ski lifts, 342 snow cannons and a snow zone equipped with a boarder cross, slope styles and free ride zone.

Valmorel has 5 snow sport learning areas, a real paradise for ski trekking and off-piste fans, a breathtaking variety of countryside ranging from pine trees to high mountain.  The Celliers valley, offers an authentic mountain ambience and experience, you’re in a wild alpine valley but with access to the wonderful skiing of the Grand Domaine.

VALMOREL

Resort Description

Valmorel is a charming ski resort; it is a smaller size with some of its neighbours and is often compared to the huge resorts of nearby Three Valleys and Espace Killy, which is a bit unfair as this resort has a lot to offer in the way of skiing and charm. The centre is pedestrianised giving the après ski a very cosy and fun feel. The resort nestles on the edge of the forest, next to the Cheval noir peak - Valmorel is a village that melts in with the landscape. The wooded, stoned and lauze roofed chalets spread around the ski lift departure points, the well designed centre and nice pedestrian street full of shops and restaurants give Valmorel a heart and it is a place where you will feel welcome and gives Valmorel its unrivalled character of a Savoyard village. Also very popular and busy in the summer when tourists come to enjoy every type of mountain activity as well as the beautiful views and flower meadows. The ski area offers a diversity of terrain for the confirmed and adventurous skiers on the vertiginous black slopes and yet is also reassuring for beginners and children to learn on the gentle slopes of summer pastures. Before I lived here I used to come for long weekends to Valmorel – and never had a dull visit, it always delivers for me. Specially equipped and secured areas have been designed especially for those new to the snow: 2 beginner stadiums for adults and children, and for those not so new - a snowpark including a half-pipe and a boarder cross. Down the valley from Valmorel you’ll find La Léchère a small thermal town which provides all sorts of therapies to experiment with! Valmorel also has some charming satellite resorts which in themselves are worth a visit. Doucy Combelouvière, Longchamp and Celliers all with their own ski lifts and identity. If you’re feeling adventurous get yourself a guide, the off-piste is meant to be interesting! So in winter This resort sits best with beginners and intermediates but also has a lot to offer the more hardened skier who is prepared to seek out the challenges. In summer it’s a delight, the cycling in particular is stunning with plenty of refuges open for very good lunches. This is a great place to buy with prices lower than its neighbouring resorts mostly because it hasn’t got the following that the others have.
